Film Types Explained

To myself, I define movies into basic types. These are as follows:

  1. A simple linear timeline film, with a single main plot and a story which reaches a conclusion.
  2. As type 1, but where there are several stories going on, in addition to the main story.
  3. As Type 1 or Type 2, but where no definite conclusion is reached.
  4. A film that is mostly non linear, has either partial flash back or almost entirely flash back sequences.
  5. This type is almost entirely non-linear, and no sequences are in timeline order. These can be almost impossible to follow.

As far as I know, all films should fit into one of these basic types. There are lots of variations on the types, but instinctively, they go from easiest to watch and understand to less easy, or in the case of Type 5, almost impossible.
